Atletico Madrid and Barcelona served up a Tuesday night treat in the Copa de Rey semi-final, which ended with eight goals scored.

The beginning and end were Atletico's, while Barcelona had the sizable chunk in the middle. The Rojiblancos shocked the crowd at Montjuic with two quick-fire goals from Julian Alvarez and Antoine Griezmann. 

Roused by falling behind so early, the Blaugrana initiated a barrage of assaults on the Atleti goal, and before halftime, they were 3-2 up. They scored once more on the other side of the break and looked set to coast to victory before two late Atletico goals ensured it was all to play in the second leg at Wanda Metropolitano.

Atletico Madrid caught Barcelona off guard, scoring within the first minute. Antoine Griezmann's precise cross found Clement Lenglet, who nodded it to the far post, where Julian Alvarez was poised to strike. 

The Argentine forward swiftly turned provider, winning the ball in the Barça half and launching a lightning-fast counterattack. His sublime through ball found Griezmann, who showcased his clinical finishing by firing past Wojciech Szczesny.

The record champions were visibly shaken, but they responded with determination. Pedri equalised in the 19th minute, slotting the ball into the bottom corner after Jules Kounde’s cutback. The hosts drew level again just two minutes later, as Pau Cubarsí met Raphinha's corner with a precise header. Barcelona capped off an exhilarating first half with another goal from a centre-back as well, as Inigo Martínez nodded in Raphinha's corner at the far post.
