Barcelona are reportedly in contention to sign Mohamed Salah on a free transfer.

Barcelona have reportedly emerged as a surprising candidate for Mohamed Salah’s signature, as his Liverpool contract winds to an end.

Salah's contract situation

The 32-year-old has been on-field face of Liverpool's renaissance as one of the best teams in Europe.

Hence, when the club's leadership phased out the likes of Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino, who along with Salah, were a devastating front three under Jurgen Klopp that won everything possible, they handed the Egyptian a new deal.

Amid rumours of a lucrative Saudi deal and an ambitious move to Real Madrid, Liverpool got the winger to agree to a contract extension in the summer of 2022.

He penned a three-year deal, meaning that the deal expires at the end of the season, leaving him free to leave as a free agent.

Barcelona emerge as candidates

Despite his advanced age, Salah is still playing at a high level. Recently, Arne Slot suggested he could maintain said level till his late 30s, as Lionel Messi and Cristiano did, as Salah has shown no signs of slowing down.

The former Basel winger seemingly desires continuation at Anfield, as, via social media, he applied subtle pressure on the club's leadership. However, an agreement is yet to be reached.

A lucrative offer from Saudi Arabia remains on the table, as SPFL big spenders have been courting the Reds forward for as long as his current contract. A new player has now entered the equation, following a report from Spanish publication Dario Sport that claimed Barcelona were monitoring Salah's situation.

The prospect of signing him on a free excites the Blaugrana as the report stated, but they will have to create more margin in their wage bill if the deal is to materialise.
