What Wenger said

Wenger praised Lionel Messi for his transformative impact on Inter Miami, describing the Argentine forward as “the most influential player” in the ongoing Club World Cup, despite not leading in statistics.

The former Arsenal coach, speaking in remarks shared by ysscore.com, emphasised that Messi's contribution to Inter Miami’s qualification for the tournament’s knockout phase goes far beyond numbers.

“Messi does not have the best stats in the tournament, but his impact is crucial. Without Messi, Inter Miami would never have qualified,” Wenger said.

Meanwhile, the Frenchman contrasted Messi’s role with that of Michael Olise, the highly-rated French winger currently with Bayern Munich, who has been statistically outstanding in the tournament.

“Michael Olise from Bayern may have the best stats and delivered excellent matches. But Bayern Munich would have qualified even without him. This is the essential difference," he said.

Inter Miami vs PSG: All eyes on Messi

Lionel Messi and Inter Miami face Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) in the FIFA Club World Cup round of 16 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta.

Inter Miami is expected to be the underdog against PSG, who defeated Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final.

It will also be Messi's first match against his former club since leaving PSG in 2023 after two seasons.
