Harry Kane eclipsed Rooney's England goalscoring record in England's 2-1 win over Italy.

Last night, as England beat Italy 2-1 in the Euro 2024 qualifiers, Harry Kane became England's leading goal scorer with 54 goals, eclipsing Wayne Rooney's 53, set in 2015.

The 29-year-old was elated about his achievement, and he revealed his conversation with Rooney, who he shared the pitch with at the time he initially set the record in 2015.

'it means everything' — Kane

England lined up against Italy yesterday in the Euro 2024 qualifiers. Declan Rice gave England the lead in the 13th minute of the game before Harry Kane's penalty doubled the Three Lions' lead in the 44th minute.

Mateo Retegui pulled one back for Italy in the 56th minute of the game, and despite a red card to Luke Shaw, and a flurry of attacks from the Azurri, England managed to hold on and win the game.

Kane, whose strike from the spot helped him become England's all-time scorer, was delighted, saying the goal meant everything to him.

"It means everything," The Tottenham man said.

"I was so excited to put the England shirt on and get back out here and get the campaign started for next year's Euros.

"It had to be a penalty and once it hit the back of the net, huge emotion. A magical moment."

Kane reveals conversation with Rooney

Wayne Rooney, whose record Kane broke, took to his Twitter to congratulate him, and in response, the 29-year-old revealed a previous conversation with Rooney.

Kane, according to the BBC, said he was on the pitch when Rooney scored his 53rd goal for the record and saw how much it meant to him.

He said he gave Rooney the boot for breaking the record, and the former Manchester United man told him the boot would be his one day.

"I was on the pitch when Wayne broke the record. I know what it meant to him, and I was so proud of him.

"I remember when I gave him the boot for breaking the record he said he would be giving it back to me one day. A special man."

Kane will have a chance to further extend his margin at the top of England's scoring chart when Gareth Southgate's men match up against Ukraine on March 26.
