Maikunkele United will be one of the two teams to represent Niger in the 72-team tournament in April.

Non-league side Maikunkele United have added to the growing list of upsets in the qualifying series for the 2023 Federation Cup as they have prevented Nigeria Premier Football League (NPFL) Niger Tornadoes from making the national finals.

The NPFL side on Tuesday fell to a penalty shootout defeat in the semifinal of the Niger State FA Cup.

Niger Tornadoes to turn attention to NPFL

Following a scoreless draw, both clubs went to penalties, where Maikunkele United scored four of them to defeat the Ikon Allah Boys, who converted just two of their five attempts.

The outcome implies that Niger Tornadoes will not represent the State in the Federation Cup tournament.

Beyond only missing out on the national championship, the 2019 Federation Cup finalists will also miss out on the opportunity to retain the state FA Cup title.

Niger Tornadoes will now turn their focus to the 2023 NPFL upon return from the hiatus for the general election.

Tornadoes fate similar to other NPFL teams

Tornadoes will not be the only NPFL side to be missing from the 2023 competition, as a hosts of sides have already suffered similar fates.
