Ex-Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini says he did not mind watching Manchester United suffer against Liverpool
Real Betis manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that he was not too sad to see Manchester United suffer a humiliating 7-0 loss to Liverpool in the Premier League, days before his side played the Red Devils in a crucial UEFA Europa League tie.
Pellegrini, who will take his Real Betis team to Old Trafford hoping to secure a first-leg, is still a fan of Manchester City, having coached them for three seasons and confessed that he did not mind Manchester United getting pummeled in their rivalry with Liverpool.
Pellegrini does not mind Manchester United suffering
Pellegrini said he was watching the Manchester United versus Liverpool game and saw the first half before joining his squad ahead of their 0-0 draw with Real Madrid.
Pellegrini described the final result as "unbelievable," but also said that he could tell from the first half what would happen in the second half.
Speaking ahead of Real Betis’ UEL round of 16 first-leg tie with the Red Devils, he said, “It was unbelievable. I watched the first 45 minutes because we were playing [on Sunday night against Real Madrid] so I missed the other six goals, but I understood immediately what would happen to Manchester United.
"The rivalry between Liverpool and Manchester, it will not be easy for them. But I am a Manchester City fan also so I was not very sad about what happened."
Pellegrini looking to improve Old Trafford record with Real Betis
Pellegrini knows all about rivalries with Manchester United after coaching their cross-town rivals, Manchester City for three seasons and playing in the Manchester Derby.
The ex-Manchester City boss came up against Manchester United six times as manager of the Cityzens and won three of those encounters. He will be hoping he can reproduce some of those results, such as the 3-0 win in his first Manchester derby at Old Trafford, when he takes on the Red Devils again as Real Betis manager.
He will however be wary of going to Old Trafford, a ground he has not won in since 2014, despite playing there four more times.
