The reigning Champions might not end the day at the top of the league

Bayern Munich lost 3-2 to Borussia Monchengladbach in the Bundesliga after an early red card to centre-back Dayot Upamecano left the Bavarians with too steep a mountain to climb.

Goals from Lars Stindl, Jonas Hofmann, and Marcus Thurman were enough to give Monchengladbach a win over Bayern despite a late fight-back from the reigning Champions.

How it happened

Bayern Munich faced a stiff test against what is now their bogey team having failed to beat Borussia Monchengladbach in five consecutive games prior to this game.

From the get-go it appeared that Bayern would fail this test as they had a man sent off before 10 minutes.

With Alassane Plea leading a Monchengladbach counter attack early in the game, Upamecano’s clumsy challenger on the forward was deemed to be a foul by referee Tobias Welz.

Luckily for Bayern, the offense took place outside the penalty area, even though Plea fell into the penalty box, and the Bavarians were spared from having to concede an early penalty.

They were not spared for long however, as Stindl scored from a brilliantly executed free kick routine to give Monchengladbach a lead after only 13 minutes on the clock.

Bayern did not let the early setbacks get to them and were soon on level terms when Cameroonian forward Eric Maxim Chuopo-Moting scored from Alphonso Davies’ cut back to send the reigning Bundesliga champions into the half time break on level terms.

Despite making four saves in the first half, Yann Sommer could not help Bayern against his former side in the second half as he conceded within 10 minutes of the restart.

Great pressing from Gladbach presented Hofmann with an easy chance and he made no mistake dispatching past his former teammate.

Gladbach extended their lead late on as Hofmann turned provider, setting up substitute Marcus Thuram for Gladbach’s third of the game.

Bayern tried to claw back the two-goal deficit, and pulled a goal back through a substitute of their own.

Teenager Mathys Tel scored in stoppage time to give the Bavarians hope, but nothing came of it as Gladbach saw out yet another win over Bayern Munich.

Bayern slip in Bundesliga race

The loss to Gladbach means that Bayern Munich will move to second in the Bundesliga if Union Berlin win against Schalke and it also means that Bayern would be level on points with Borussia Dortmund in third if they also win their game against Hertha Berlin tonight.

The loss was the sixth time in a row that Bayern Munich have failed to beat Borussia Monchengladbach.

A run that includes four wins for Gladbach and a 5-0 spanking of their eminent rivals. Extending the run means that Bayern have now not beaten Gladbach since May 2021.
