Joao Cancelo speaks on transfer rumours suggesting he received an offer from Real Madrid.

Joao Cancelo has come out to dispel rumours claiming he received a proposal from Real Madrid to join them during the January transfer window.

The 28-year-old wing-back is currently on loan at Bayern Munich from Manchester city with an option to buy, and he has come out to refute claims suggesting he was been approached by Real Madrid for a move back to Spain before he opted for Bayern.

Cancelo was asked about links to Real Madrid during the January transfer window and he replied that he did not receive any offer from Los Blancos. Cancelo also acknowledged that an interest from Real Madrid is a good thing, as it would mean a player has shown an admirable level of quality.

“I’ve not received any proposal from Real Madrid in January, no… if rumours say so, I don’t know,” Cancelo said to Movistar, per Fabrizio Romano.

“If a club like Real Madrid wants you, it’s a pleasure — it also means I’m doing the right things.”

Cancelo's situation

Joao Cancelo pushed for a move away from Manchester City in the January transfer window, after his game time took a hit.

The Portuguese full-back reached an agreement to join Bundesliga giants Bayern Munich on loan until the end of the season, with a purchase option of €70 million.

However, the buy option could prove too expensive for Bayern Munich, as Bayern Director Hasan Salihamidzic revealed after the move that they informed Cancelo the fee could be difficult for them to pay.

“We play with open cards. The most important thing is that Joao feels comfortable in Munich and can perform in the second half of the season,” Hasan Salihamidzic told Bild.

“But we also told him clearly that this sum is difficult for us to imagine in the next few years.”

A return to Manchester City looks unlikely due to the circumstances of his exit. This opens up the possibilities of new destinations, and Real Madrid, who have had to shoehorn players like Lucas Vazquez and Federico Valverde at right-back and Eduardo Camavinga at left-back, could prove a viable option for Cancelo, who is adept at playing on both flanks.
