Paul Onuachu's departure from KRC Genk could cost them the Belgian league title according to an ex-Belgian international.

KRC Genk losing Paul Onuachu to Southampton in the January transfer window could derail their title ambitions according to Belgian football legend Marc Degryse.

Onuachu was and remains Genk's top scorer with 16 goals before he left to join Southampton, a tally that remains unmatched in the whole Belgian Super League.

The club are currently top of the league on their quest to win a first league title since 2019 but Degryse warns that may be difficult without Onuachu.

Can Genk win the league without Onuachu?

The answer to that question is unclear but Belgian legend Degryse seems to believe they cannot as he expressed his doubts in an interview with Het Laatste Nieuws.

The 57-year-old who played 63 matches for Belgium said, “Onuachu’s departure may still raise doubts,” in response to questions about Genk's title-winning chances.

“Wouter Vrancken won’t say it, but you can’t be blind to that. Even if they deserved at least a point on Sunday and should have even won," Degryse continued.

Degryse then began to go through the club's other striking options, “You have to deal with Samatta because he has become a starter now. But he will not become Onuachu."

Degryse continued, “It’s more up to Genk to hope that Arokodare finds his bearings quickly. Until the playoffs, things can still go wrong for Genk.

“Because in the meantime, the Union has made further progress. If you see how they presented themselves in Bruges… They have charisma, conviction, and quality. Genk will still have a lot to do. The Union surely has fewer problems with the departure of Vanzeir, while the losing Onuachu could cost Genk points,” he rounded off.

In his 19-year career, Marc Degryse played for Club Brugge, Anderlecht,  Sheffield Wednesday, PSV, Gent and the Belgian national team with whom he played at two World Cups in 1990 and 1994.
