African forwards Yoan Wissa and Bryan Mbeumo put Liverpool to the sword in impressive win for Brentford

Brentford pulled off yet another impressive result, this time a superb 3-1 win against Liverpool at the Brentford Community Stadium to start the new year.

Africans played a crucial part in delivering the result as Congolese striker Yoane Wissa and Cameroonian winger Bryan Mbeumo both scored in each half to seal a famous win.

The result extends Brentford's unbeaten run to five games and also moves them up to seventh on the log after beating Manchester City and drawing Tottenham in their last three league games.

First half

Brentford started the game without their topscorer and talisman Ivan Toney who was out with a knee injury but the Bees still found ways to sting Liverpool.

Ben Mee got on the end of a corner kick to open the scoring for Brentford in the 19th minute which was later ruled as an Ibrahima Konate own goal upon VAR intervention.

VAR and corner kicks would be a recurring theme in the first half as Toney's replacement, Yoane Wissa had two goals ruled off.

The Congolese striker would eventually score a legitimate goal as another ball was delivered from a wide area, this time from open play, Wissa was left in acres of space to head past Alisson for a 2-0 lead with just three minutes left to play in the half.

Second half

Liverpool responded with three halftime substations and they seemed to get the needed response when Darwin Nunez scored in the 48th minute but it was ruled out for offside.

Klopp’s men did get a lifeline when Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain met a left-footed cross from Trent Alexander-Arnold to reduce the deficit in the 50th minute.

Liverpool pressed on for the equaliser with momentum in their favour but it was Brentford who struck the next blow to deflate their visitors.

Mbeumo was a constant thorn in the side of Liverpool's defence

Brentford caught the Liverpool on the counter as Bryan Mbeumo raced through and got the better of Konate to beat the onrushing Alison and make it 3-1.

VAR was needed to confirm if Mbeumo had fouled Konate before scoring but the decision went in Brentford's favour to wrap up the points late on and secure an historic win.
