Boston Celtics All-Star forward Jayson Tatum had surgery on Tuesday to repair a ruptured right Achilles tendon that will sideline him for several months.
Jayson Tatum suffered an Achilles tear in the Celtics’ 121-113 Game 4 defeat to the New York Knicks, and the team revealed the severity of his condition and the subsequent surgery, casting uncertainty over the defending champions’ repeat aspirations and Tatum’s availability for the next season.
When Kevin Durant ruptured his Achilles in the 2019 NBA Finals, he missed the entire 2019-2020 season, which gives an idea of how long Tatum may be sidelined.
Tatum, 27, has been Boston’s standout in the playoffs, averaging 28.1 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 5.4 assists per game for the second consecutive postseason. The Knicks hold a 3-1 lead in the Eastern Conference semifinals, with Game 5 set for Wednesday night at TD Garden.
Tatum was carried off with 2:58 left in Monday’s game after his leg buckled during a scramble for a loose ball following a turnover. He had scored 42 points, his playoff high this year and one of his finest postseason showings, before the injury.
