British-Ghanaian Jeremiah Azu storms to 60m gold at European Indoor Championships

British star sprinter Jeremiah Azu sped to European 60m title in Apeldoorn in a world-leading time, which now puts him as the favourite for gold ahead of the World Indoor Championships in Nanjing.

In a highly contested men's 60m final at the European Indoor Championships in Apeldoorn, British-Ghanaian Jeremiah Azu blazed to the gold medal in a Personal Best (PB) and world-leading time of 6.49s.

The 23-year-old defeated a brilliant Henrik Larsson who clocked a Swedish National Record of 6.52s for the silver medal, while another British athlete, Andrew Robertson, won bronze in 6.55s.

Azu's inspirational run made it the first time Britain had two European indoor men's 60m medallists since Jason Gardener (gold) and Craig Pickering (silver) in 2007.

In addition, it is his first individual European gold medal at senior level, having won 100m bronze and 4x100m gold in 2022, and was part of the British 4x100m relay squad that claimed bronze medal at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.

Azu was born in the Netherlands and raised in Wales. In 2024, he became the first Welshman to run the 100m under 10 seconds in wind-legal conditions time of 9.97s.

With his brilliant performance and gold medal in Apeldoorn, the talented speedster will be gunning to claim the world 60m title in a few weeks, and also aim for another memorable outdoor season with the goal of making the British team to the Tokyo World Championships in August.
